The Benefits of Dams to Society

Did You Know...

. . . that Seven Oaks Dam has removed the most massive flooding problem west of the Mississippi River, eliminating a floodplain previously threatening more than three million people? Seven Oaks Dam, part of the $1.4 billion Santa Ana River Mainstem Flood Control Project in southern California, was recently presented with an Honor Award by the Chief of Engineers Design and Environmental Awards Program. The Corps of Engineers dam was cited for its flood protection benefits, environmental preservation and aesthetics. Jury comments: This is a remarkable engineering project that blends flood control protecting three million people, with seismic concerns along the San Andreas Fault, while minimizing environmental impact. This 550-foot-high structure blends seamlessly with its natural setting. It protects endangered species and preserves the historic works on the site.

Thanks to Dan Casapulla, Corps of Engineers, Washington, DC, for contributing this Benefits of Dams.
