Conference Details
Introduction
The 2011 USSD Conference theme is 21st Century Dam Design — Advances and Adaptations. A key strength of USSD is the knowledge and dedication of our members that serve on technical committees. These technical committees are dedicated to maintaining the "state of practice" in the analysis and design of dams and water resource projects — each from a specific technical perspective.
This 2011 USSD Conference is dedicated to our technical committees and providing each with the opportunity to identify relevant ideas to modern design and classical methods of analysis. Understanding the advances and adaptations to classical dam design means and methods is critical to the dam engineers of the 21st Century.
The 31st USSD Annual Meeting and Conference will be held in San Diego, California. A Planning Committee, chaired by Michael F. Rogers, MWH, with assistance from the Committee on Concrete Dams and other USSD Committees, has organized the Technical Program. (USSD Committee information.)
Complete Conference information including a Registration Form, Hotel reservations, and Exhibit and Sponsorship opportunities will be available from this page about January 1, 2011.
Conference Activities
Activities will begin on Monday, April 11, with USSD Committee Meetings, followed by the Annual Meeting of Members. Participants and guests will enjoy networking and socializing during the kick-off reception on Monday evening.
A Tuesday morning Plenary Session, featuring invited speakers discussing contemporary water and dam issues, will begin the Conference Technical Program. On Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday, oral presentations during concurrent technical sessions and a poster session will address the Conference theme.
During the Closing Banquet Wednesday night, several awards will be presented including the Outstanding Paper, Outstanding Poster Presentation, and Outstanding Paper by a Young Professional. Young professionals (age 35 and younger) are encouraged to participate — all young professionals attending the Conference will receive a reduced registration fee.
In addition, a new award will be presented to the Outstanding USSD Technical Committee, to recognize the important contributions that technical committees make to USSD. The award will be based on committee participation, website updates, organization and specific relevant contributions to USSD members.

Exhibition and Sponsorships

Field Tours
One field tour will visit the San Diego County Water Authority's Olivenhain RCC Dam and San Vicente Dam Raise Project. The 318-foot-high Olivenhain RCC Dam was completed in 2003, the first new RCC dam in California. The project won many awards, including ASCE's OPAL Award finalist and ICOLD Outstanding RCC Dam project. The San Vicente Dam Raise Project is currently in the construction phase to raise the 67-year-old, 220-foot-high concrete gravity dam by 117 feet using RCC. When completed, the project will be the largest raise of a concrete dam in the United States and the largest raise in the world using RCC.
A second tour will include a visit to the Diamond Valley Project near Hemet, owned and operated by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California.
Conference Venue
San Diego is famous for its sunshine and near-perfect weather, but it's also a vibrant, cosmopolitan and multi-cultural city — the 8th largest city in the U.S. The Conference will be held in a premier waterfront hotel, within close proximity to the airport and downtown. A variety of restaurants, nightclubs and shopping opportunities are nearby.
